How the Rotary Pouch Machine Works

The pouch filling and sealing machine can be designed with an inline or rotary layout. For today's article, we're delving deeper into rotary layouts. This design saves factory floor space and is built with top-of-mind ergonomics. The workings of the rotary pouch machine are The rotary pouch machines hold pre-formed pouches, fills them with the product, and seals them, at speeds of up to 200 pouches per minute.

This process involves moving the pouches in circles to different 'stations' that are positioned in a circular layout. Each station performs different packaging tasks. There are usually 6 to 10 stations, with 8 being the most popular configuration. The rotary pouch machines can also be designed as single-lane, two-lane, or four-lane. Here's how the rotary pouch machines process works:

1. Loading Pouch

The pre-formed pouch is manually loaded by the operator into the pouch magazine at the front of the pouch packaging machine. The pouch is brought to the machine by the pouch feeding roller.

2. Hold the Pouch

When the pouch is detected by the proximity sensor, the vacuum pouch loader takes the pouch and transfers it to a set of the gripper, which will hold the pouch as it moves around the rotary pouch machine to a different 'station'. This gripper can continue to support up to 10 kg on the best rotary pouch machine models. For heavier pouches, continuous pouch supports can be added.

3. Printing/Embossing

Optional If printing or embossing is desired, the equipment can be placed at this station. The rotary pouch machine can use both thermal and inkjet printers. The printer can place the desired date/lot code on the pouch. The emboss option places the date/lot code that is placed into the pouch seal.

4. Zipper or Pouch

Opening & Detection If the pouch has a zipper closure, the vacuum suction pad opens the bottom of the pre-formed pouch and the opening jaw captures the top side of the pouch. The jaws open apart to open the top of the pouch and the pouch that has been made is pumped by an air blower. If the pouch does not have a zipper, the vacuum suction pad will still open the bottom of the pouch, but only an air blower is used. Meanwhile, two sensors are near the bottom of the pouch to detect its presence. If the pouch is not detected, the filling and sealing station will not function. If there is a pouch, but it is not placed properly, it will not be filled and sealed but will remain in the rotary apparatus until the next cycle.

5. Fill up the Pouch

The product is poured into the pouch with a pouch funnel, usually on a multi-head scale. For powder products, auger fillers are used. For a liquid pouch filling machine, the product is pumped into the pouch with a liquid filler with a nozzle. The filling equipment is responsible for the correct measurement and release of a separate number of products to be included in each previously made pouch.

6. Completion of Products or Other Options

Sometimes loose contents have to settle to the bottom of the pouch before being sealed. The station gently shakes the pre-made pouch to achieve that.  

7. Sealing & Deflation of the Pouch

The remaining air is removed from the pouch by the two components of the deflator before sealing occurs. For sealing, a heat seal bar is used by closing at the top of the pouch. Using heat, pressure, and time, the sealant of the pouch are joined together to create a strong seam.

8. Cooling & Discharging

The cooling rod passes through the seal to strengthen and level it. The finished pouch is then dumped from the packaging machine into containers or onto conveyors and can be transported to downline equipment, such as scales, x-ray machines, box packaging, or carton packing equipment.
